John Summers High School has a very successful record for completing the Gold Level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The present group of participants have just successfully completed their final expedition in ‘Wild Country’.
It has been seven years since any group in Flintshire completed a Wild Camp. The present group were the first Duke of Edinburgh Unit in the whole of the United Kingdom to ‘camp wild’ in the Trough of Bowland. The participants did not have access to normal corporate facilities and with just their tents and trangia cooker and their survival skills as they camped on the high fells with only nature for company. The Wild Camping experience was also special because only recently has the Trough of Bowland become available to walkers and permission had to be gained from the Duke of Westminster Estates to Wild Camp on the land.
